Taichung continues to deliver strong results in promoting the international marketing of its agricultural products! Following its successful return to the Canadian market and expansion into eastern distribution channels, the Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government is further broadening its market presence in 2026. In partnership with the Dongshih District Farmers' Association, it held the “Taiwan Taichung Premium Ponkan Promotion Event” in Vancouver on March 27. Through expanded sampling promotions and broader placement across diverse retail channels, the city is comprehensively deepening its presence in the North American market and enabling Taichung’s premium citrus to continue shining on the international stage.
The Agriculture Bureau stated that Taichung’s Ponkan mandarins have actively expanded into overseas markets in recent years. In 2024, export channels to Canada were successfully resumed after the pandemic, and in 2025 export volume reached 58 metric tons. Distribution was also successfully expanded to eastern regions including Ontario, delivering outstanding results. IBuilding on this foundation, Taichung is further expanding its marketing efforts in 2026, with the Greater Vancouver area designated as the core market for promotion, in order to further enhance brand visibility and market penetration.
The Agriculture Bureau pointed out that Ponkan mandarins are one of Taichung’s major export fruits, with principal production areas in Dongshi, Shigang, Fengyuan, Houli, Xinshe, and Beitun. The cultivation area totals 1,387 hectares, with annual output of approximately 24,992 metric tons, making Taichung the largest production area in Taiwan. Taichung’s uniquely favorable geography and climate produce premium Ponkan mandarins that are plump, brightly colored, springy and juicy in texture, and balanced in sweetness and acidity, making them highly popular with consumers at home and abroad. With a well established cold chain system, shelf life can be extended through May, increasing flexibility in export supply.
The Agriculture Bureau explained that this marketing campaign is also expanding into diverse sales channels, including premium supermarkets, Asian supermarkets, and traditional markets. Retail outlets include Urban Fare Yaletown, PriceSmart Foods, Foody World Richmond, Rice World, Save-On-Foods Coquitlam, H Mart, No Frills, and T&T, significantly boosting product visibility and accessibility so that more local consumers can easily enjoy the fresh, sweet flavor of Taichung’s Ponkan mandarins.
The Dongshih District Farmers' Association stated that, in addition to continuing to cultivate the Vancouver market, it is also reinforcing the distribution channels it has developed in Ontario in recent years, covering Toronto, Scarborough, and Markham, and gradually building a stable sales network. The Agriculture Bureau further noted that, following the enthusiastic response to Murcott in the North American market in 2025, exports of Murcott will continue to be promoted in 2026, demonstrating the diverse strengths of Taichung’s citrus industry and allowing the “Taichung Citrus” brand to continue shining in international markets.
