The Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government (hereinafter as the Agriculture Bureau )assisted the Xinshe District Farmers’ Association in hosting the “Shining Grapes, Fruitful Xinshe – Taichung Premium Grapes and Specialty Agricultural Products Exhibition and Sale” on August 2 and 3 at the Taipei Hope Plaza. The event promoted Taichung’s high-quality agricultural products, including Xinshe grapes, Dongshi grafted pears, and Lishan peaches. The public is warmly invited to visit and make purchases.
According to the Agriculture Bureau, summer is the peak season for grapes, with Kyoho grapes being Taiwan’s main variety for fresh consumption. In Taichung, Kyoho grapes are cultivated over 372 hectares, producing an annual yield of 9,606 metric tons. The primary cultivation areas include Xinshe, Dongshi, Waipu, and Shigang, with Xinshe accounting for the largest portion at 301 hectares. Located on the western foothills of the Central Mountain Range, the region benefits from the nourishing waters of the Dajia and Daan Rivers, as well as significant day–night temperature variations, which favor sugar accumulation and fruit coloration. The Baimaotai grapes, grown at an altitude of 700 meters on the Baimaotai Plateau with extreme day–night temperature differences, are recognized as the highest-quality grapes in the country.
The Agriculture Bureau explained that Taichung has the largest production area for grafted pears in Taiwan, mainly distributed across Dongshi, Heping, Houli, and Shigang. The commonly seen Shinsei and Hosui pear varieties are currently produced by grafting Japanese-imported scions. To cultivate a uniquely Taiwanese grafted variety, Liu Shen-quan selected an excellent new line—Formosa pear—after evaluating over two thousand hybrid offspring. The Formosa pear is large with thin skin, highly disease-resistant, reducing the need for pesticides and fertilizers. It has a long storage life, resists browning when cut, maintains shelf quality, is juicy with no grit, and offers a sweet and pleasant taste, making it highly favored by consumers.
Lishan benefits from a uniquely cool climate and pure water, nurturing sweet and juicy peaches, making them one of Taiwan’s most sought-after local summer fruits. Lishan peaches are cultivated over approximately 462 hectares, the largest production area in Taiwan. The harvest season is currently underway, featuring high-quality varieties such as Shanghai Peach, New Baifeng, Dayu Baifeng, Nakatsu White Peach, and Setouchi. The season extends until mid-August. With Taichung’s grapes, grafted pears, and peaches all in peak production, the public is encouraged to support Taichung’s premium agricultural products.
At today’s event, distinguished guests included Xu Hu-iying, Deputy Director of the Central Region Branch of the Agriculture and Food Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture; Liao Wen-yi, Technical Specialist of the Agriculture Bureau; Luo Wen-zheng, Secretary-General of the Xinshe District Farmers’ Association; Zhang L-imei, Secretary-General of the New Taipei City Farmers’ Association; and former Secretary-General Yang Dong-liang.
